GEOLOGICAL HYDROGEN EXTRACTION (GOLD): LIKE OIL?

In the short time leading up to 2024, a wide range of reports have appeared in the media about the possibility of geological formations that have allowed the formation of areas in the subsoil with important gas deposits with a majority of hydrogen. Even the Financial Times asserts that "they could be a source of supply of this gas for hundreds of years".

In our recent news item on the popular "colours of hydrogen" (see https://www.revistadyna.com/noticias-de-ingenieria/los-colores-del-hidrogeno), we did not mention gold hydrogen as a source to be taken into account, but there are many communications that have appeared in the last few days that present concrete data on prospecting carried out in recent years to confirm the existence of exploitable deposits in addition to the naturally occurring emanations of this gas that have been observed.
These emissions have been known since the 1980s in the region of Bourakebougou, some 40 km from Bamako in Mali, and since 2011, the oil company PETROMA, which was based in the area, has been technifying this extraction to use the gas to generate electricity for the population. Further drilling has confirmed the existence of more hydrogen there, and there have also been reports of emissions at the Bulqizë chromite mine in Albania, the definition of large areas with the possibility of significant stocks in northwest France, in large areas of Nebraska, Arizona and Kansas in the USA, in Australia, Russia, Turkey, etc.
It is widely believed that the extreme volatility of hydrogen has meant that when gas analyses have been carried out in various boreholes, this gas has either not been taken into account or the necessary precautions have not been taken to prevent leakage. It is true that the hydrogen richness of potential deposits has not been concretely defined either. Many of them will be inaccessible or of low richness (Mali's is around 98%), and the operations to be applied to the extracted gases have not been determined.
The process by which geological hydrogen is formed is also not well understood, although in some texts it is said to result from the oxidation of iron-rich minerals, such as olivine, releasing hydrogen. For this reason they are considered to be "living" deposits, i.e. in continuous gas creation.
