SUMMARY
With the increasing development of nanotechnology and nanoengineering, artificial electromagnetic, acoustic, plasma, elastomechanical and other materials have been created using 3-D printing, which are now known as metamaterials. The appearance of these new materials requires us to carefully review the concept of metamaterial. The current state of the art in metamaterials indicates that they are artificial structures created from other materials with different physical properties than those of its components. With manufacturing techniques in state-of-the-art laboratories, the components of a metamaterial behave as a fully homogeneous medium with an array of elements whose size and spacing is much smaller than the spatial variation scale of the excitation force field. In the case of an electromagnetic metamaterial is one that constitutes a periodic structure, whose maximum dimension is smaller than the incident wavelength with which it is going to work. In them, wave propagation is unusual; unlike ordinary means, phenomena such as regressive waves, negative refraction and reverse Doppler effect appear, which currently have multiple applications and provide opportunities for technological innovation over a wide range of frequencies. Some optical and microwave applications are described by extending this description and analysis to low frequency longitudinal and transverse acoustic waves associated with seismic events since this type of negative refraction waves has a similar theoretical basis as it is quantitatively demonstrated in the Material Supplementary to this article. In addition, briefly describe another type of mechanical metamaterials and derivatives whose technology is less mature but will be important in the near future.
